Walking the River Wey

The Wey towpath runs the full length of the navigation, from Godalming to the Thames at Weybridge. It's flat, well-maintained, and accessible year-round. Most of it is surfaced or compacted gravel--muddy patches are rare except after heavy rain.

You can walk the whole thing in a long day (about 7-8 hours), but most people tackle it in sections. The path passes through a mix of countryside, wooded stretches, and the edges of market towns. There's always something to look at--locks working, boats passing, birds on the water.

Circular walks

Several circular routes use the towpath for one leg and return via footpaths through surrounding countryside. These make satisfying half-day walks with variety built in.

Pub walks

The Wey is well-served by riverside pubs, making it easy to plan a walk around lunch. The Anchor at Pyrford, the Weyside in Guildford, and the Old Crown at Weybridge are all directly on the water.

Dogs

Dogs are welcome on the towpath but must be kept under control, especially near locks and livestock. Some stretches pass through fields with sheep or cattle--keep dogs on leads in these areas.
