Fishing the River Wey

The Wey holds good stocks of roach, chub, bream, perch, and pike, with trout in some upper stretches. Several clubs control fishing rights and offer day permits.

Fishing on the Wey is managed by local angling clubs who lease stretches from the National Trust. Each club sets its own rules and sells permits--some through local tackle shops, others online.

The river offers a mix of coarse fishing and, in the upper reaches towards Godalming, fly fishing for brown trout. Depths vary from shallow glides to deeper pools near locks. Weir pools can be productive but are often match-fished at weekends.

What you'll catch

Roach and chub are the most common species. Bream shoals move through in summer. Perch lurk around structures. Pike provide sport in winter. The trout fishing above Guildford is the preserve of fly fishers--check club rules carefully.

Getting started

You'll need an Environment Agency rod licence (available online) plus a day ticket or club membership for the stretch you want to fish. Our permits page lists where to buy tickets; the clubs page has contact details for membership enquiries.
