Boating on the River Wey

The Wey was one of England's first navigable rivers, opened in 1653. Today you can explore by day boat, spend a week on a narrowboat, or join a guided trip from Dapdune Wharf.

The River Wey and Godalming Navigations run for 20 miles through Surrey, with 16 locks to navigate between Godalming and the Thames at Weybridge. The navigation is managed by the National Trust, keeping it well-maintained and peaceful.

Most boats on the Wey are hired from local operators who know the river well. Day boats are perfect for a few hours of pottering--no experience needed, just a brief lesson and you're away. For longer adventures, narrowboat holidays let you travel the full length at walking pace, mooring wherever takes your fancy.

The National Trust runs guided boat trips from Dapdune Wharf in Guildford, where you can also see the historic Wey barges and learn about the river's industrial past.

Do I need a licence?

Powered craft need an Environment Agency registration. Hire boats include this. If you're bringing your own boat, you'll need to register before launching. Kayaks, canoes, and paddleboards also need registration--see our licences and permits page for details.
