Ripley

A village of inns

Ripley sits just off the navigation, a short walk from the towpath. It's famous for its pubs--the village was once a stopping point on the Portsmouth Road, and several old coaching inns survive. The green is attractive, the pace is slow.

Newark Priory is the draw for walkers. The ruined 12th-century monastery stands on an island where the Wey splits around it. You can't visit the ruins themselves (they're on private land), but the view from Newark Lock is atmospheric, especially in morning mist or evening light.

The Seven Stars is worth seeking out--a 1930s pub with original features, off the beaten track on Newark Lane. Sunday lunch is good; closed Mondays.

Getting Here

Ripley is on the B2215 between Guildford and Cobham. Regular buses from Guildford. The towpath passes near the village--access at Newark Lock brings you within walking distance of the green.
